Assault
A conviction
for an offence of violence, like assault or aggravated assault,
can have numerous repercussions on an individual beyond the obvious
risk of a prison sentence. In British Columbia, the Criminal Records
Review Act mandates background checks on individuals seeking employment
in a number of fields. A conviction for assault, or in some cases
even the imposition of a peace bond, may preclude one from employment
in one’s chosen field.
Of
particular concern are allegations of violence within a family relationship.
These may have immediate and devastating effects on an accused person,
including but not limited to denial of access to children, removal
from the family home, or even denial of bail.
